Comets Win Season-Opening Invitational at HCC

The Halifax County High School golf team wasted little time making a statement to open the 2026 season. Behind a tournament-best round of 67 from Owen Mason and a balanced performance throughout its lineup, the Comets cruised to a first-place finish Monday in a four-team invitational at Halifax Country Club, posting a team score of 288 to finish comfortably ahead of George Washington, Chatham and Dan River.
George Washington placed second with a 332, followed by Chatham at 347 and Dan River at 359. Mason turned in the lowest score of the day across all four schools, setting the tone for Halifax’s dominant performance on its home course.
The Comets also received strong rounds from Brady Grant and Jacob Allen, who each shot 73. Jackson Grant and Luke Ashwell each carded a 75, while Noah O’Kelly finished with an 87. Halifax’s depth proved to be one of its biggest strengths throughout the invitational, with five golfers shooting 75 or better as the Comets pulled away from the rest of the field.
Monday’s victory also marked a successful start to a new era for the program under first-year head coach Chris Dockrill, whose squad opened the fall campaign with a convincing team performance. The Comets will look to carry that momentum into their next event Thursday when they travel to Heritage High School to compete in the John Scott Memorial Golf Tournament.
